Blood Sugar Balancing Smoothie

Starting your day off with a low glycemic, high fiber, high protein, low carb & sugar breakfast is the key to balancing your blood sugar (and hormones!) for the day so that blood sugar doesn’t crash. You’ll avoid feeling depleted and tired, and no longer feel that shakiness and craving for carbs that many of us often experience.

I cannot tell you how many years of resistance it took me until I finally realized that I FELT a million times better if the first thing I put into my body was a blood sugar balancing meal (or in this case smoothie.)

I still don’t pop out of bed and eat. That’s just not for me. As long as you make sure that within 2-3 hours of waking up, you eat a low sugar, high fiber, high protein meal, you’ll have a much greater chance of keeping blood sugar and hormones balanced for the day.

This smoothie has been my go to for a while, and the kids will drink it too! It is packed with a hefty dose of green veggies, a whole cup of fruit, plenty of protein and fiber, and is filling enough to keep you full until lunch.

You’ll need:

  • A blender

  • Almond milk with no added sugar (I like the kind from TJ that is made with only water and almonds)

  • 1 cup of frozen or fresh organic blueberries (or mixed berries)

  • 1 heaping handful (or 1 heaping cup) of kale, spinach or arugula

  • 1 tablespoon of unsweetened coconut flakes

  • 1 tablespoon of almond butter

  • 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed (add any other seeds you like)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • water as necessary for thinning (usually around a half a cup or so)

All you need to to do is blend this up and drink it. That’s it. Don’t let it sit for too long, drink it right away, and use water as necessary to thin, so it is a consistency you like. I prefer mine pretty thick, but to each her own!
